This ongoing series is based on the Unit, let us call it X. X serves one purpose on its own, but its function and appearance can change dramatically when it is added to, or multiplied by, itself. The repetition of X results in a new object: Y. Though Y is made up of X units, it loses its original function and becomes a new entity, perhaps even an object of beauty. In a world obsessed with ‘mass production’, the focus of this series is to use what is readily available rather than to use additional resources to create a new object.

Compared to three dimensional objects or installations, the two dimensional (2-D) realm is less constricted by physical limitations and exists as a depiction of the world-whether it is real or imagined. Where a sculpture made of wooden hangers exists in some way as a literal representation of itself (an object), a 2-D composition is a window through which to see an object, rather than existing as the object itself.

akamundo was scheduled to do an outdoor sculpture installation at the Brightest Young Things pool party at the Capitol Skyline Hotel on Saturday June 20th 2009, but due to a rain cancellation it was rescheduled for Sunday June 22nd, 2009 at the same location during “Spike’d Sundays” Capitol Skyline Hotel pool party hosted by Spike Mendelsohn of Good Stuff Eatery in DC’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Empty Nest a solo show of suspended mobile sculptures by Edmond van der Bijl took place on 3.13.09 at The Affinity Lab in Washington DC’s historic Adams Morgan. The show was a smashing success with an awesome turnout. Special thanks to Phillipe Chetrit (Affinity Lab, Fatback), The Affinity Lab, www.brightestyoungthings.com, and all those who attended! In times100, the main body of work is comprised of one-hundred 8″x8″ handmade wall panels which attempt to increase the functionality of the art piece by becoming visually stimulating objects that a viewer can easily identify with and can visualize owning, all while in the relatively neutral context of an newly renovated empty home in Bethesda, MD. They are designed to sell in order to become objects in peoples lives rather than obscure objects that serve little function.

In 2003, Akamundo independently embarked on an alternative art space project in an empty retail store window in Georgetown, Washington DC. During the course of the show several different sculptures and installations were displayed. The window space was sponsored by Eastbanc. This project represented Akamundo’s first venture into an creating an art space since graduating from the University of Toronto in 2002. Click here for more

Fashion: Translating an artform into a visually and financially accessible medium poses a challenge. Solution? The t-shirt. A globally accessible medium which is easily recognizable and familiar to people of all walks of life, making it an ideal object to start from when exploring the line between creating art that exists within gallery walls and creating art that has a functional role in daily life… Click here for more

The akabuq is the first venture into the book-making process for akamundo. Again we find the themes of individual units combining to create a greater whole. In this case, the pages are the units, each personalized by a message or text which combine to create the final product. The original akabuq concept was developed as a commemorative piece for a 70th birthday. Messages, thoughts, and pictures where solicited from family and friends and then translated into a custom format, giving emphasis to important words and phrases. The akabuq transcends traditional book format by becoming an object of aesthetic value as well as an information storage device. It is currently being developed by akamundo into a customizable handmade product that will be available for purchase. Click here for more

Hexagon, a collection of new sculptures by Edmond van der Bijl featuring the ‘Hexagon Series’ was an independently produced show that took place in an empty retail space at 3307 M St. NW Georgetown, DC from 1/23/10 – 2/1/10.
